TAST Week Thirty-Six: Linked Chain Stitch/Beaded Link Chain Stitch

This week's new stitch for the TAST Challenge hosted by Sharon Boggon at Pin Tangle was stitch thirty-six (can't believe it has been that many weeks!) linked chain stitch. As it's name suggests, this stitch is another from the chain stitch family. Sharon has posted a tutorial about it on her blog which also covers how to stitch beaded link chain stitch.

As I like stitching chain stitch all these stitches from the chain stitch family appeal to me and I enjoyed learning how to stitch this linked version.

First orientation (usual way up)

I added two lines of this stitch to my sampler.  The first was the simpler linked chain stitch and the second the beaded link chain stitch.  It is an easy progression from one to the other and I enjoyed stitching both versions.  I then outlined the box on my sampler with stem stitch.  All the stitches were worked using a variegated silk thread.

Second orientation (up-side-down)

When I photograph my sampler I usually orientate it as you can see in the middle photograph above but, for some reason I turned it the other way round this time and, I think I like it better this other way up.  It doesn't really matter for the moment but, when I stretch it over a canvas, I will need to have it the right way up.  Which do you prefer?  Of course I will probably change my mind several times before I decide!

  2. Oh, lovely stitch again, especially with the beads! I love both ways probably it will depend on the last filled spaces. At the moment i would go for number two, lol!

  3. Hello Christine, both ways look fine to me at the moment and as Martina mentions, it depends on what other remaining stiches fill the spaces and perhaps their colours also will help you decide. Pretty latest stiches on your sampler, I think chain stitch is one of my least favourite stitches to do but I like your beaded version.

  4. Another fun stitch to add to your sampler. As for orientation - the second one is my favourite. Reason for that? Because the stitching that looks like a sun is at the top.

  8. Just proves how which way we look at anything, can alter our outlook, perspective and mind!
I much prefer that 2nd layout too, wonder if our left or right brains are steering our eyes lol
I find it interesting too that you haven't worked from side to side, top to bottom but are in filling.
I'd have simply worked methodically from top to bottom and missed out something subconsciously - about slotting designs in, alongside, above, below - sort of like integrating in life!
Gosh, that's deep and it's only 7.30 Sunday morning lol
The beaded chain looks striking by the way lol

    1. Thank you Lyn! I have added the stitches where I think they would fit in best which is why I have jumped around.... I think I'll probably wait until the boxes are all filled to make a final decision re. orientation! Have a lovely week! Christine x

  9. Your sampler is looking very pretty, I think at the moment it looks better in the second picture, but it may change as you add more stitches - and it may even look good sideways on!

  10. Your sampler is looking great! I think when you get it completely filled in, it will become more apparent as to how it should be oriented--either way looks good to me! Happy stitching!

  11. Liebe Christine,
Dein Sampler wird immer schöner. Mir würde die zweite Variante besser gefallen, denke aber die Anordnung lässt sich erst zum Schluss wirklich festlegen.

  13. Liebe Christine,
