Cushions, Cushions, Cushions.....

Hot on the heels of my successful crocheted cushion, I decided to make some patchwork/quilted cushions.  Of course, once I started to think about what sort of cushion to make, I had all sorts of ideas running through my mind and, ended making up quite a number of them!!

In fact, five so far!! Of course, I used my favourite Tilda fabrics and I tried quite a few different styles of cushion.

I started with this one. It has a central hand embroidered square, bordered with fabric to make a bigger central square which I then surrounded with a further grid of squares and sashing. It is finished with an outer border.

I have quilted in the ditch around the central square and along each sashing seam to emphasise the grid.

With the next two, I wanted to incorporate some words.  I choose the words 'Love' and 'Home'. I machine appliqued the letters to squares of fabric and then pieced the squares together to form one larger square.  I then used this larger square as the centre of a log cabin style block, adding strips of fabric to each edge in turn until I had a square the size I wanted for the finished cushion.

I quilted in the ditch around the central square and around each set of strips.

The two final cushions I made using a random patchwork pattern which I sketched out on gridded paper.  Once they were pieced together, I quilted them both, each in a different way. The first (above) has a wavy grid quilted across it, the other (below) lines of a wavy stitch which I have on my sewing machine.  I used it on a quilt I made last year and, it adds great texture to the surface.

As a final touch I machine appliqued a piece of ribbon to one of the patches.  It has the words 'with love' printed on it.

For all of the cushions I used an envelope-style backing.  I still have one more cushion (in another style) cut out ready to get started on but, I am very pleased with those that I have finished so far!

Have a wonderful weekend!!

  2. Goodness, you SHOULD be very pleased! Love every single one.I especially love the random patchwork pillow. There you go teasing me with the Tilda fabrics. ;)
    I have questions:
Is that a stem stitch on the hand embroidered flower?
I've not used the embroidering aspect of my sewing machine - is it difficult to control while outlining the applique pieces? (hope that makes sense)
I have only made a zippered pillow. I know I can Google and find instructions for the envelope style, but do you have a favorite tutorial?
Beautiful work - that I will probably copy. :)
