CQJP Challenge 2015: Finished October Block

Today I would like to share with you my finished CQJP Challenge 2015 block for October. As I mentioned in a  previous post about the CQJP Challenge, I have again decided to use a block that I pieced for one of Kathy Shaw's wonderful online classes as the base block for October. The basic pieced block before any embellishment looked like this....

After I used the base block to complete a couple of the tasks (the addition of a surface embroidery design and a silk ribbon monogram) for the class (ICQC 103) it looked like this....

Since then, I used a photocopy of the block to plan out my seam embellishments which, I find very useful in getting the balance of the block to my liking.

The finished block now looks like this.....

Here are some close ups of the seam treatments which included the use of some of my newly learned TAST stitches....

Colonial knot silk ribbon roses
with detached chain leaves and
fern stitch fronds

Silk Ribbon Butterfly

Silk Ribbon Butterfly

Blanket stitch combined with silk ribbon colonial knots

Fern stitch vine with sequins and pearl beads

Glove stitch

Crossed buttonhole stitch and wheatear stitch (TAST)

I will also be using another of the blocks I created in Kathy's class for my November block. I have already photocopied the block and made a plan for the seam treatments.

Now I just have to get stitching!!

For those of you who are interested in Kathy Shaw's crazy quilt classes, Kathy has recently announced a few changes as to how she will be organising classes in 2016 and, has also just released details of a new book she has written and which is available for pre-order through her Etsy shop.  Follow the links to find out more information from her website.

  3. What a stunning block. I love the butterflies. A great idea to photocopy the block so you can doodle. I do that for quilting. I draw out the quilt so I can play with designs

    1. Thank you Gina! It helps a lot to have a full size sheet to doodle with. I don't always stick with the first ideas but it certainly helps the balance of the block to plan ahead. Christine x
